Finding the perfect workhorse pickup truck to take on your toughest jobs in style and comfort can be challenging. Both the 2018 Ram 1500 and 2018 Ford F-150 have a lot to offer and have been at the heads of their class for more decades than most can remember. The question today is, which one of these highly popular trucks is going to provide you with the capabilities you need and the comfort you want? To help you make the right choice, we have put together this head-to-head comparison covering several of the most important features of each vehicle.
Power and Performance
At the heart of any pickup truck, lies what’s hiding under the hood. The 2018 Ram 1500 starts out with a base 3.6-liter V6 engine that pumps out a healthy 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque. For those want more towing capacity, there is 3.0-liter EcoDiesel that offers class-leading fuel-efficiency while delivering 240 horsepower and a very impressive 420 lb-ft of pure load-hauling torque. All engines are connected to an 8-speed shiftable automatic transmission.
On the other side of the coin, the 2018 Ford F-150 starts out with a smaller and less powerful 3.3-liter V6 engine that is rated at 290 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. While the difference between the tow engines seems minor, the extra power in the Ram 1500 will become more obvious when you start loading the bed. At this time, the F-150 is not being offered with any type of diesel engine, although Ford has said they plan to add a diesel engine later this year.
Interior and Exterior Features
If you are looking for a truck that offers you a virtual office on wheels, the 2018 Ram 1500 might be just what you are looking for. Start with a pair of 10-way power adjustable front seats complete with lumbar support. Add in a leather-wrapped steering wheel and in-floor storage, you get far more storage than the 2018 Ford F-150.
The 2018 Ram 1500 offers the exclusive RamBox® cargo management system that makes it much easier for you to organize and store your tools and equipment. The 2018 Ford F-150 offers an aluminum bed that is more susceptible to physical damage than the all-steel bed in the Ram 1500. The Ram 1500 also features “wheel to wheel” side strips that make it easier for you to access things in the bed of your truck and at the same time helps improve overall aerodynamics and of course fuel economy.
When it comes to today’s cars and trucks, buyers want their new vehicle to be loaded with the latest technology. The 2018 Ram 1500 comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen display and the latest Uconnect® 4C infotainment system. This system works with both Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto®. The 2018 Ford F-150 comes with a much smaller 2.3-inch productivity screen and is not compatible with either Apple CarPlay® or Android Auto®.
